A Letter.

When I was doing the 'your favorite picture of yourself' post for the May challenge and going some old pictures, I stumbled across this one. My roommate (and still-BFF) Kelsey took it one night while we were just sitting in our dorm room.

I know I briefly talked about the good old days a few days ago, but I just have to say... I was really struck by this picture for some reason. Maybe because I don't have that many candid pictures of myself... I'm usually the one taking the pictures. Or maybe it's because I look so young in that picture. I mean, I'm only 25, so it's not like being 18 was THAT long ago. But it seems like a lifetime ago. So many things have happened between then and now. So many things I would tell her if I could.

Dear Alyssa,

Those feelings you feel about not wanting to teach? They're real, and they're okay. People are going to give you crap about not wanting to teach; just ignore them.

Kelsey's right about that guy you're dating. You won't admit it until you're 24 and planning a wedding to a really amazing guy, and you'll tell her over a cheesy chicken sandwich at Ham's. Don't worry, she doesn't gloat... that much.

Speaking of that, it might seem like Kelsey doesn't like anyone you date, but don't worry: she likes your fiancĂ©.

I know you feel guilty about not seeing Meredith that much even though you were best friends in high school and you go to the same college. She still loves you, and your relationship will pick right up post-graduation.

I know you're not excited about your Resident Advisor job for next year, but you're going to LOVE it. It'll introduce you to your best friend Jenna, help you realize what you REALLY want to do with your life, and eventually, will be the reason you meet the man who will become your husband. So quit complaining about it, okay?

Oh yeah, you DO find someone that wants to marry you. Crazy, right? He's awesome. He's really good at snuggles and he brings you surprise milkshakes from Cookout sometimes. Seriously, he's the best.

Next year, your dad will lose his job that he's had for 23 years. It's going to feel like the end of the world, but it's not. I promise. That's nothing compared to some things that come at you later on.

Everyone talks about how crappy the economy is, and how they feel sorry for you as a college student, but don't worry, you'll find a job after graduation. And the best part about your job? You love it.

Next year when you get a car, you should go visit Mama Lou. Just do it, okay? You think she's going to be around forever. But she isn't. So go. Go.

Enjoy all that free coffee from Tate Street Coffee... after you graduate you won't go nearly as much, because it feels weird to be in there without Kyle.

You'll still sleep in that shirt you have on - seven years later. It just gets more and more comfy.

And finally - you're stronger than you think. No, really. You'll surprise yourself.

Love,
me

ps - No, the lame jokes don't get old. Even when you're 25. And yes, you DO finally find a man who appreciates them.

I really love this–it had me thinking of all the things I would have told myself!
