Coupons: yes or no?

So, one morning last week, I was listening to the radio. A guy called in and was saying that he had recently on a date that he thought had gone well, so he was surprised when she never returned any of his phone calls for a second date.

Obviously, since it's morning radio, they called the girl up (live on the air) to see what happened. She agreed that the date had gone well, and then finally admitted what turned her off about him: he used a Groupon on their date.

I don't know what your reaction is to hearing that, but when I first heard her say it, I was all "woah, what? you used a coupon on your first date? what on earth is wrong with you?"

But THEN I started thinking: why is that? What's so wrong with a coupon on a first date? I mean, I would be weirded out by it, but I can't tell you exactly why. And really, being weirded out by that is a weird societal thing, right? Everyone is expected to be financially stable, but when you use a coupon for something, someone is always there to make fun of you.

I guess I see both sides. Everyone says you're not supposed to talk about finances on a first date, right? Do coupons fall into that category? Does using one give off the impression that you don't have money to spend on a "real" date? Or does it show that you're smart enough to make good financial decisions? I mean, financial security is an important thing to look for in a partner. And also, does it matter what the coupon is for? I think I'd be less weirded out by a "free appetizer" coupon than I would a "buy one entree, get one free" coupon. Overall, I think I'd be worried that the person was TOO frugal. We rarely go on expensive or extravagant dates, but it's nice to know that we CAN if we want to sometimes. If someone doesn't even want to go full price on a first date, where will he want to cut corners later on in the relationship?

To be clear, Garrett and I use Groupons and Living Social vouchers all the time, because we are solidly in the #balleronabudget camp. Also, I don't think it would make me rule out a guy that otherwise, I had a really good connection with.

As soon as I heard this whole thing on the radio, I was like "I GOTTA see what my blog friends think about this." So what do you guys think? Would you be okay with it, or would it weird you out?

first off that's great. poor guy! haha. But really, I think I'd be a bit weirded out..but not enough to not call him.. I mean if the date went well, why not. I used coupons on the regular, why not on a date!

I think it is great! I could see where most people would think it is strange. If the guy asks where she wants to go to dinner and she mentions somewhere...and they happen to have a coupon...USE IT! As long as the guy mentioned it at some point before the date, I think its fair game!

Hmm... maybe he should have approached it in a different way. I bet if he joked about using it she would have been okay. I also cringed when I read your post title, but then thought about it... I use them all the time too!

I think it would just be a weird first impression. Maybe once you got closer to someone, a groupon wouldn't be such a turn-off. I've never had this happen to me, but I know I would be a little weirded out just because I feel like I'm supposed to.

I think it sets a "i didn't know if this was gonna suck so i didn't wanna spend too much money on tonight" vibe. Although any other date- 2nd 3rd so on that's different. I alwaysss use coupons/groupons but it's not first date material. you're right tho- if I was into him it wouldn't matter either way in the end

Maybe it depends on your stage in life. If I were 21? Probably more acceptable than dating at closer to 30. I would say it's not okay on the first date - you are trying to make the best impression possible and as much as I respect saving money, I don't think the first date is the right time. Using a deal on an activity a few dates in is okay, though. Is it a total dealbreaker? Probably not, but it wouldn't help the guy's case!

i am broke as a joke, so i totally wouldn't hold it against the guy if he used a groupon.... as long as the food was good!

Short answer it wouldn't bother me if someone used a coupon but I guess I am a practical woman and think if someone can save a buck why not using a coupon is nothing being a general tight ass and not wanting to spend money at all is not good and a real turn off......she wasn't the girl for him

I'm broke, so I think a coupon is a great idea. I wouldn't judge.
