Did I ever tell you about that time that Garrett came to town and I locked my keys in my car in downtown Winston-Salem on a Friday night?
Because that’s a fun story.
Garrett met me in Greensboro for lunch when he got to town around 1. We were keeping an eye on my parents house that weekend while they were out of town, so after lunch and some Greensboro hangouts, we headed to Winston. We had plans for drinks and dinner with my friend Meredith, who was meeting Garrett for the first time.
We popped by my parents house to drop off Garrett’s car, and headed downtown in my car. When we got there, it was pretty hectic (duh, it was downtown Winston on a gorgeous afternoon) and the only spot we could find was a parallel spot. I’ll be really honest and tell you that sometimes I’m scared to parallel park. I know how, but there were so many people and cars whizzing by and I was just so nervous so I asked Garrett to do it. We switched seats quickly, he parked the car, and we both got out.
Aaaaaaaand this is where the story gets fuzzy.
He swears he handed my keys back to me and said “put these in your purse." For the record, I’m sure that he did. I probably wasn’t listening. I’ll own it. BUT: I also feel that when you hand someone something, you have to make sure they know you handed it to them. Ya dig?
When we started walking towards the bar, I looked at Garrett and said “Do you have the keys?" He gave me a look and said "…are you serious?" I gave him the same look back and said “Uh, yeah? Do you have them?"
"No, I handed them to you."
"No you didn’t."
"Yes I did. I handed them to you while you were still sitting in the car and told you to put them in your purse."
"No you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
I rummage through my purse. Obviously, they’re not there.
We both walk back up to my car, and there they are. Sitting in the passenger seat.
Awesome.
We were waking to meet my friend Meredith, so when we get there, I ask her to take us back to my parents, where we hunt down the spare key to their house, get inside, hunt down the spare key to my car, and drive all the way back to Winston.
Of course, this is the first time Meredith and Garrett are meeting. “This is my boyfriend. Will you drive us 20 minutes back home?" She obviously didn’t mind, but it was far from the chill hangouts that I had planned. We’re really lucky that it happened close to home, and not when I was in Virginia or something. We’re also lucky that we were meeting someone that could take us home instead of having to get a cab or call AAA.
Once we got back downtown, I bought them both wine, and we laughed about it.
But now, every time Meredith and I go anywhere, she
Seriously. You lock your keys in your car ONE TIME after almost a decade of driving and you neeeeeeeever hear the end of it.
Someone pipe in and tell me I'm not the only person who's done this. Someone? Anyone?

I've done this enough times to count on two hands. Luckily the car didn't lock itself each time but of course there were the times that it did. It's the most helpless feeling ever. You're one millimeter away and you can SEE them yet, nope, nothing you can do.
Hahah! Loved this! Steve locked his keys in his car when it was in the drive way and no we don't have a spare. He and I had a fight over whether or not a locksmith would unlock his car...I won lol. Next time you are in winston holla at me :)
Oh I've been there...Ef that ish... it sucks! Glad you had someone with you at least!!!!
I locked my keys in my car once while the car was still running. You are not alone!
My boyfriend latched my keys onto my clutch because he knows that thing is literally glued to my side and I won't lost that.
